Miller Park is always famous for the wonderful foods that can be found there during Homesteader Day weekend, and this year a special treat was added as the first annual Homesteader Day Dutch Oven Cooking Contest was held last Saturday afternoon.
According to Cheryl Curry, contestants entered dishes in three different categories: main dishes, side dishes, and desserts. Six contestants entered the competition with ten dishes.
Tuna McAlpine, who claimed first place in the main dish category with his Creole Chicken, also received the People's Choice award after the taste test was complete. McAlpine also entered a brownie dish in the dessert category.
Shawna Curry entered Potatoes Especiale and won the side dish first place award, as well as tying for first place in the dessert category with her Apple Dumplings.
Jimmy Espeseth entered Cowboy Beans in the side dish category, and won the second place People's Choice award for his efforts.
Skweak Henneman tied with Shawna Curry in the dessert category with her raspberry dessert. She also entered a dish of cornbread in the side dish category.
Other participants in the contest were Scott Curry, who prepared a sauerbraten dish, and Jeremy Curry, who prepared barbecued pork ribs and carrots.
"It was great cooking with the other Dutch oven cooks and seeing their techniques and what they were cooking up," McAlpine said. "We all had a great time and, based on the number of taste testers there, I think there'll be quite a few more contestants next year."
"Dutch oven cooking is outdoor cooking at it's finest, and it's so versatile too," he continued. "You can cook a main course, side dish and dessert all over the same charcoals. I've already got a secret recipe I'm working on for next year."
