Chocolate Potato Cherry Cream Torte? Only in Wisconsin

A chocolate cake loaded with mashed potatoes to make it moist has grabbed the top prize in a recipe contest sponsored by Wisconsin's potato growers.
Marilyn Blankschien, of Clintonville, creator of the winning Chocolate Potato Cherry Cream Torte, will receive a $150 gift card to Econo Foods, courtesy of the the Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers' Association Holiday Celebrations recipe contest, the association announced this week.
"Desserts are my favorite thing to make," Blankschien said in a prepared statement. “Using potatoes in this recipe makes it a moister cake. And it’s a healthier dessert because there’s no shortening or oil.”
Brenda Bula, Ladies Auxiliary officer and a contest judge, commended Blankschien for giving potatoes a life beyond side dishes. "By combining potatoes with chocolate, Marilyn’s recipe is a perfect example of how potatoes can be used in different ways.”
Barbara Hahn’s Golden Potato Onion Gratin recipe earned second prize and a $100 gift card; Jennifer Coduto won third place and a $50 gift card for her Baked Potato Crab Cakes. All three winning recipes are featured at the contest Web site, which currently is accepting entries for another recipe contest.
The WPVGA just launched its Spud Bowl 2010 recipe contest, which coincides with the first home football game of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, dubbed the Spud Bowl. Contestants can enter their favorite potato recipe for tailgating and football parties at the contest Web site. The contest ends Dec. 18. Winners will be announced Jan. 4.
